Katie Payne’s two-part article has certainly brought to the fore a topic that needs to be addressed with honesty, boldness and compassion on the part of the community of faith. While there were many arguments presented in Katie’s piece, each of which merits reflection and response, I want to touch on just one of the biblical texts she mentioned in her arguments. I believe that her handling of Romans 1 represents a glaring example of a common hermeneutical error: employing eisegesis (reading something into the text from an already chosen perspective) rather than an honest exegesis (letting the text speak out its message to us as readers).
